Abstract:

Studies and characterization of composites based on sugar palm stem powder reinforced by matrix polyester resin, epoxy resin, and polyurethane resin using conventional mold and press techniques have been carried out. The content of sugar palm stem powder was varied within 2 to 10 wt. %, i.e., 90-98 wt. % of the polyester, epoxy and polyurethane resins. The pressure used was 300 MPa, and the temperature was 120°C for polyurethane resin and 70°C for the polyester resin and epoxy resin, with the pressure treatment time of 20 min. The testing results of physical and mechanical properties, such as the density of 1.19 gr/cm3, porosity of 1.83 %, water absorption of 2.83 %, impact strength of 80.47 kJ/m2, flexural strength of 80.42 MPa, tensile strength of 5.95 MPa were obtained. The results of SEM studies show that the surface structure of the samples is homogenous. The study shows the mechanical properties and physical properties meeting the Standard JIS A 5905:2003, that is flexural strength >>32 MPa and 0.3-1.3 gr/cm3 density.
