A simple RGB-type chromogenic sensor based on color modulation of chloranilic acid for moisture determination of alcohols
SSI "Institute for Single Crystals", STC "Institute for Single Crystals", National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 60 Nauky Ave., 61072 Kharkiv, Ukraine
We have demonstrated that water content in alcohols is successfully detectable by means of a cheap and simple operating RGB-type chromogenic signalling system. For the first time a moisture sensor was based on the bathochromic shift in the system of chloranilic acid (CAA) - alcohol solutions with admixed water which was caused by an interaction of the formed CAA monoanion with the solvent to produce the color change. The concentration dependence of the brightness of the color channel G was found to be described by the equation of the falling exponential of the first order for isopropanol solutions with the water content from 0.87 to 180 mg·mL-1. The calibration curve of the water sensor showed a good linear relationship (R = 0.991) in the water concentration range of 1.65-22.9 mg·mL-1. LOD, LOQ and upper measurement limit were 4.0-5.0, 7.9 and 120 mg·mL-1, respectively. The proposed sensor has excellent stability, good repeatability, short response time (30 s), reasonable recoveries and can be used in practical application.
